I think it's fair that Beluga be named as the first "Restaurant of the Week".
The 160-seater restaurant is ΓΌber-stylish, the menu has spectacular variety and the feel of the restaurant is traditional but still modern.
Not only has every student I know looking for an amazing deal of sushi & cocktails eaten there, but I was also lucky enough to be invited to job-wrap dinner there (i.e. all you can eat & drink at the expense of someone else, score!). It was during the World Cup period and we were a table of 20. Not only was the table we received absolutely gold (Outside with heaters at every corner of the table with full view of the large screens to watch the game), but not once did the waiter slip up an order, hesitate to respond to our demands (there were many, ranging from asking them to hold a Jabulani ball for the night to be collected the next day to an order of cigarettes). The point is, Beluga is not just a pretty face.
Yesterday a very good friend of mine went to Beluga for a quick bite, and as always we were not disappointed. We sat outside as the day had progressed from a rainy morning into a gorgeous warm afternoon (that's Cape Town weather for you). I ordered a Mojito at R22 (on a 50% discount) which was quite delicious. I always enjoy mine with a dash of extra rum, however it was lunch and I was not going to push it!
I ordered a light meal of Rainbow Rolls and Salmon Sashimi, whereas my friend tucked into Carin's Rolls and Salmon California Rolls. |
The atmosphere was a lot more relaxed than it usually is at Beluga, simply because we went at 3pm, so I imagine the lunch-time rush was over. Because Beluga has become known for one of the most "IN" Restaurants, there often seems to be an air of pretentiousness surrounding the restaurant, a so-called "I'm so much better than you"-complex, however the food really is great, the service is on par and if it's worth having people look at you up and down as you walk into the restaurant, so be it. Locals enjoy the place just as much as the tourists do simply because it's a great place to meet girl friends for drinks, you almost always are sure to bump into some-one you know and honestly, a lot of good-looking people attend the restaurant. It's really not a bad view!
And you get JELLY BEANS to end off your stay - honestly who does not enjoy a good jelly bean? :) |
TIP: Be sure to apply for a Caviar card. This will entitle you to earn points on your card at any Caviar branch (Bleuga, Sevruga, Blonde, Caviar delicatessen), which will entitle you to eventually earn discounts on meals, free meals, etc. It does not cost a thing and simply place it in your bill when paying. Presto!
Be sure to visit the Beluga Website for Menu and Specials List.
At the moment they are running a 50% discount on all sushi (excl. platters) and cocktails daily till late lunch and ALL DAY on Sundays. This I feel is the best call when attending the restaurant if you are not looking to spend more than R100 p.p.
